Fighting Diabetes, One Meal, One Step, and One Choice at a Time!

November is

American Diabetes Month!

Let's take this opportunity to learn how the foods we eat, the activities we enjoy, and the choices we make every day can support a healthier future.

At The Fighters, we believe your health is worth fighting for. And the fight starts with YOU!

Understanding Diabetes – Knowledge Is Power

Let's Talk About Diabetes!

Fighters, let's get informed!

Diabetes affects millions of people and families. But understanding the condition is an important step toward prevention, early detection, and better management.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body doesn't use insulin effectively or cannot produce enough insulin to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

The good news? Healthy lifestyle choices can make a meaningful difference.

Here are three important areas to focus on:

  • Nutrition: Build meals around vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, and whole grains.

  • Physical Activity: Move your body regularly to support insulin sensitivity and overall health.

  • Health Awareness: Know your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol numbers.

Remember, lifestyle changes can complement medical care, not replace it. Work with your healthcare professional to determine what's right for you.

🍽️ Your Plate Can Be Your Starting Point!

Fight With Your Fork – Food Is Medicine

What we eat matters, Fighters!

The foods we choose every day can help support healthy blood sugar levels and overall wellness. That's why we encourage a whole-food, plant-based approach to eating.

Let's give our bodies more of what they need:

  • Leafy green vegetables

  • Beans, peas, and lentils

  • Fresh fruits

  • Whole grains

  • Nuts and seeds

You don't need expensive ingredients or complicated recipes to start eating healthier.

Start with what you have. Make small changes. Discover new flavors. And most importantly, enjoy the journey!

Who Am I?

🥗 A Personal Message from Chef Charles

Why This Fight Is Personal to Me

Fighters, I want to share something from my heart. My passion for helping people live healthier lives didn't come from a book. It came from my own family and the painful losses that changed my life forever.

I watched my mother struggle with poor health and obesity, and I lost her when she was only 58 years old. I also lost my father at 41 and my sisters at 52 and 54. Those losses made me think deeply about my own health and the importance of understanding how the choices we make every day can affect our future.

For years, I didn't fully understand the connection between what we eat and how we feel. Then, after participating in a month-long no-meat fast at my church, something changed. I noticed my energy returning, and I felt a difference that I didn't want to lose. That experience started a journey that led me to embrace a plant-based lifestyle more than 20 years ago.

Today, I am passionate about helping others discover what I wish more of us had understood earlier: the way we eat and live matters! Food is more than something that fills our stomachs. Our food choices can support our health, and healthy habits can help reduce the risk of certain diseases, including type 2 diabetes.

That is why American Diabetes Month means so much to me. I don't want families to wait until someone gets sick before they begin learning about nutrition, exercise, and prevention. I want us to take action now. I want us to teach our children, encourage our parents, support our friends, and show one another that healthy living can be delicious, enjoyable, and rewarding.

Fighters, I am not asking you to change everything overnight. I am asking you to start somewhere. Add more beans and vegetables to your plate. Take a walk. Learn a new healthy recipe. Check your numbers. If you are living with diabetes, work with your healthcare team to develop a plan that supports your health.

I lost people I loved, and I cannot change that. But I can use my story to help others make informed choices that may give them a healthier future. That is why I do this work. That is why I founded My Health My Mississippi. And that is why I will continue to fight alongside you.

Remember, Fighters, we are responsible for caring for ourselves. Our brains, hearts, kidneys, lungs, and the rest of our bodies depend on the choices we make and the care we receive.

Let's not wait for a wake-up call. Let's take care of ourselves today, for ourselves and for the people who love us.

Your health is your wealth, and your health is worth fighting for!

Let's keep fighting, one meal, one step, and one victory at a time.

"We cannot change yesterday, but we can make better choices today for a healthier tomorrow."
