October Health Spotlight

Four Reasons to Fight for Your Health This Month

October is giving us plenty to talk about.

This month, we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Healthy Lung Month, National Vegetarian Month, and National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month.

At first, these may seem like four completely different topics.

But when you look closer, they all point us back to the same thing:

Taking responsibility for our health.

Our health is connected to what we eat, how we move, the habits we practice, the risks we avoid, and the choices we make every day.

At The Fighters, we believe you don't have to wait until something goes wrong to start fighting for your health.

So let's talk about it.

QUICK JUMP ➤

🎀 Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Your Health Is Worth Fighting For

October gives us an important opportunity to talk about breast cancer—not just during this month, but throughout the year.

Breast cancer has touched far too many families, including our own Fighters family.

And awareness means more than wearing pink.

It means knowing your body, getting recommended screenings, making healthy choices, and supporting those who are fighting, surviving, or remembering someone they love.

Prevention Starts With the Choices We Make

At The Fighters, we believe prevention starts with what we do every day.

That doesn't mean there's one food, one exercise, or one lifestyle choice that can guarantee we won't develop cancer. There isn't.

But we can make choices that support our overall health and may help reduce certain risks.

🥦 Fill your plate with more whole plant foods.

🚶🏾‍♂️ Keep your body moving through regular physical activity.

⚖️ Work toward a healthy weight.

🍺 Be mindful of alcohol consumption.

🩺 Stay current with recommended screenings and talk with your healthcare team about your individual risk.

❤️ Support someone who is walking through breast cancer.

And don't forget the power of simply being there.

Sometimes fighting for someone's health means encouraging them to make an appointment, preparing a healthy meal, taking a walk together, or simply reminding them that they aren't alone.

🥦 One Choice at a Time

This month, let's remember those we've lost, celebrate survivors, stand beside those currently fighting, and encourage every person in our community to take their health seriously.

Don't wait until something is wrong to start taking care of your body.

One meal.

One choice.

One workout.

One screening.

One victory at a time.

The Fighters are fighting for our health—and breast cancer awareness is a fight we all have a part in.

Your health is your wealth. Your health is worth fighting for.

🫁 Healthy Lung Month

Take a Deep Breath

Take a deep breath.

Right now.

Your lungs are working for you every day—so let's work for them, too!

Every breath is a reminder of how important our lungs are. They bring oxygen into our bodies and remove carbon dioxide, supporting everything from our heart and brain to our muscles and everyday activities.

So Healthy Lung Month gives us a simple question to think about:

What am I doing today to protect my lungs tomorrow?

There are everyday choices we can make to support our overall lung and respiratory health.

🫁 Protect Your Lungs

Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke, and pay attention to air quality and other harmful exposures.

🥦 Feed Your Body Well

Fill your plate with vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.

A healthy eating pattern provides important nutrients that support overall health.

🚶🏾‍♂️ Keep Moving

Regular physical activity helps strengthen the muscles you use to breathe and supports cardiovascular fitness.

You don't have to start with something complicated.

A walk counts.

💧 Stay Hydrated

Water helps your body's systems function properly. Keeping yourself hydrated is another simple way to support your overall health.

😴 Give Your Body Time to Recover

Rest matters.

Your body needs recovery time to maintain good health, so don't underestimate the importance of quality sleep.

🩺 Listen to Your Body

Persistent coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain, or other concerning symptoms deserve attention from a healthcare professional.

Don't ignore what your body is trying to tell you.

Every Breath is an Opportunity

You don't have to wait until you have a lung problem to start caring for your lungs.

Every walk matters.Every healthy meal matters.Every cigarette you don't smoke matters. Every healthy choice matters.

This month, let's give our lungs some attention and make choices that support healthy breathing for years to come.

BREATHE. MOVE. EAT WELL. LIVE WELL.

The Fighters are people fighting for their lives—one meal, one choice, one victory at a time.

Your health is your wealth. Your health is worth fighting for!

🥗 National Vegetarian Month

Let's Put More Plants on the Plate!

Now let's talk about something we can all do at the dinner table.

Put more plants on the plate.

National Vegetarian Month is a great time to celebrate plant-forward eating and discover just how delicious healthy food can be.

And here's something important:

Being vegetarian isn't just about what you take away.

It's about what you add.

Add colorful vegetables.

Add fruits.

Add beans, peas, and lentils.

Add whole grains, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices.

Add flavor.

Add variety.

Add foods that nourish your body.

At The Fighters, we believe healthy eating should be delicious, satisfying, affordable, and something you can enjoy with your family.

Start Where You Are

You don't have to change everything overnight.

Try one new vegetable.

🥬 Add more leafy greens to a meal.

🫘 Make beans, peas, or lentils part of your regular rotation.

🌾 Choose more whole grains like oats, brown rice, or wild rice.

🍎 Enjoy fruit as part of your everyday eating pattern.

🥕 Experiment with a new plant-based recipe.

👨🏾‍🍳 Learn how to prepare the foods you already love in healthier ways.

Maybe start with Meatless Monday.

Take your favorite chili and load it up with beans and vegetables.

Put some greens on the plate.

Try a plant-based version of a family favorite.

Or pick up a fruit or vegetable you've never cooked before and give it a try.

Then do it again tomorrow.

More Plants. More Color. More Flavor.

A plant-forward lifestyle isn't about feeling deprived.

It's about adding more foods that nourish your body while learning to make healthier choices one meal at a time.

So here's our challenge for National Vegetarian Month:

How many more plants can you put on your plate?

One meal.

One choice.

One victory at a time.

The Fighters are fighting for their health—and we're putting our health on the plate!

❤️ Your health is your wealth. Your health is worth fighting for!

🦴 National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month

Strong Bones. Strong Body. Strong Fighter.

We spend a lot of time talking about our heart, our blood pressure, our blood sugar, and what we put on our plates.

But let's not forget the bones that carry us through life.

Our bones provide structure, protect our organs, and help us move.

They support us every day, so taking care of them should be part of taking care of ourselves.

Why Bone Health Matters

Osteoporosis can cause bones to become weak and more likely to break.

The good news?

There are healthy habits we can practice throughout life to support bone health.

So how do we fight for stronger bones?

🥬 Eat Your Greens

Leafy greens such as kale, collards, broccoli, and bok choy provide important nutrients, including calcium and vitamin K.

🫘 Don't Forget the Beans

Beans and other legumes provide minerals and protein that contribute to a nutrient-rich diet.

🥛 Choose Calcium-Rich Foods

Calcium-fortified plant milks, calcium-set tofu, and other fortified foods can help provide calcium without relying on dairy.

☀️ Pay Attention to Vitamin D

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium.

Talk with your healthcare professional about your individual vitamin D needs.

🚶🏾‍♂️ Keep Moving

Weight-bearing and resistance exercises can help maintain bone and muscle strength.

Walking, strength training, dancing, and other appropriate activities can all be part of an active lifestyle.

🏋🏾 Build Muscle, Too

Strong muscles help support your bones and can improve strength and balance.

🚭 Avoid Smoking

Smoking is a risk factor for osteoporosis and fractures. Another reason to protect your body and your future.

🍷 Be Mindful of Alcohol

Excessive alcohol consumption can negatively affect bone health.

🩺 Know Your Risk

Age, family history, certain medications, medical conditions, and other factors can affect osteoporosis risk.

Talk with your healthcare professional about whether you need screening or additional prevention strategies.

🌿 Plant-Based Doesnt Mean Nutrient-Deficient

Let's clear up an important misconception.

Being plant-based doesn't mean being nutrient-deficient.

A well-planned plant-based diet can provide many of the nutrients your body needs, including nutrients that are important for maintaining healthy bones.

The key is variety, balance, and making informed choices.

Your plate can be colorful.

Your meals can be satisfying.

And your food can still taste good.

Healthy eating doesn't have to mean giving up the joy of food.

🎀 One Month. Four Health Reminders.

One Mission.

Breast health.

Lung health.

Nutrition.

Bone health.

Different conversations, but one common thread:

Your health deserves your attention.

We don't need to wait for January to make a resolution.

We don't need to wait for a diagnosis to start caring.

And we don't need to change everything overnight.

We can start with the next meal.

The next walk.

The next healthy choice.

The next screening.

The next conversation with our healthcare team.

Your body is counting on you.

So this October, let's make a commitment to ourselves:

Feed your body.Move your body.Know your body.Protect your body.

And keep fighting.

One meal. One movement. One choice. One victory at a time.

❤️Keep Fighting for Your Health

At The Fighters, we believe our health is something we all have a part in.

Not just this month.

Not just when something goes wrong.

Every day.

🥊 Be a Fighter.

Fight for your health—one meal, one choice, and one victory at a time.
